Walnut Canyon National Monument is located about 10 miles southeast of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, near Interstate 40. The canyon rim elevation is 6,690 feet above sea level; the canyon's floor is 350 feet lower. A 0.9 mi long loop trail descends 185 feet into the canyon, passing 25 cliff dwelling rooms aatributed to the "Sinagua", a pre-Columbian cultural group that lived in Walnut Canyon from about 1100 to 1250 CE.

Zach's First Visit to Walnut Canyon

All the photos from the trip on which Mary and I took our grandson, Zach.

The best part of having a 5-year-old grandson is being able to show him the marvelous world in which he finds himself. For example, there are 700-year-old archaeological ruins just a couple hours north of us, in an area that is physically beautiful as well as historically significant. And Zach has always (since infancy) enjoyed visiting cultural sites. So showing him another one is a joy for us both!
